How Long Does It Take to Get MC Authority?
By Authority Launcher · Updated October 29, 2026
Quick answer: Most new carriers go from application to active MC authority in about 3 to 6 weeks. That includes FMCSA's review, a 10-day protest period after your application is published, and the time it takes your insurance company to file proof of coverage and your process agent to file your BOC-3.
Typical timeline
| Stage | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Create Motus account and verify identity | Same day |
| Complete application and pay $300 per authority | About an hour if you're prepared |
| FMCSA review, MC number issued and published | Several business days to a few weeks |
| Protest period | 10 days from publication |
| Insurance filing (BMC-91/91X) and BOC-3 | Often 1 to 5 business days once you bind and order |
| Authority shows active | After the protest period and once both filings are on record |
What slows people down
- Waiting to shop insurance until after the MC number is issued.
- Legal names that don't match IRS or state records.
- Failed identity verification. Have a valid, unexpired government ID ready.
- Selecting authority types you don't need, which can trigger extra requirements.
How to speed things up
- Prepare every answer before you log in to Motus.
- Get insurance quotes before you apply.
- Order your BOC-3 as soon as your MC number is issued.
- Check your status on SAFER instead of guessing.
Keep your paycheck while you wait
You can apply before you leave your current job. Many company drivers and leased-on owner-operators file for authority, line up insurance and a BOC-3 during the protest period, and keep driving for their carrier until the new authority shows active on SAFER. Check that your current carrier is fine with it, and only haul loads under your own MC number once it is active.
What happens after you're active?
You're in FMCSA's New Entrant program. A New Entrant Safety Audit happens within your first 12 months of operation, and monitoring continues for 18 months. Missing a drug and alcohol testing program, missing insurance, or not keeping hours-of-service records are automatic failures, so set them up before your first load.
Frequently asked questions
Can I haul while I wait?
Not for-hire interstate loads under your own authority. You can drive under another carrier's authority (for example, leased on) in the meantime.
